Similar to Structured Literacy, Mathematics is explicit, direct, cumulative, and intensive. Active participation and repetition towards mastery is emphasised.
Maths is delivered daily. Number concepts are taught throughout the year. Measurement, geometry, statistics, probablilty, are taught within Localised Curriculum concepts, ensuring coverage across the year.
We use a range of resources to support us while teaching. The teaching sequence within the Refreshed Curriculum provides teachers with a scope and sequence to follow. We use materials to support understanding and thinking, just like in a traditional math lesson.
In 2025, PR1ME Mathematics is one of the tools used by the teachers at Mihi School to teach the Refreshed Mathematics and Statistics Curriculum. In 2026, teachers will also use Numicon within their maths programme.
Teachers follow the following structure when teaching mathematics.
This structured approach means that the learning needs of students will be met.
When not working with the teacher, students will complete independent mathematics tasks to consolidate the concepts taught by the teacher.
This could involve online games, board games, knowledge games and other activities where students are manipulating and working with numbers or mathematical concepts.
