In 2025, Mihi School is using The Writer's Toolbox in writing.
The Writer's Toolbox focuses on the structure of different sentence types, promoting variety and fluency in writing. Importantly it also supports the oral language of students, ensuring that they are using correct structures when sharing their ideas orally. Our junior students often record their sentences using a talking tin prior to writing and can check that their sentence makes sense and has the correct structure.
First of all students learn about new sentence structures using the sentence train .
This visual representation of the different parts of a sentence reinforces the learning, allowing for the manipulation of vocabulary in a hands-on way.
Sentence types taught include:
Simple sentences
Very short sentences
Adverb start sentences
Preposition start sentences
Red, white and blue sentences
W-start sentences
Power sentences
Once students have mastered sentence structures they can put them to use on the Writer's Toolbox online platform.
While they are writing, students can access feedback around the number of sentence types used, their spelling, fluency and the amount of writing they have completed. There is a focus on using a variety of different sentence structures in a piece of writing.
Studnets can work on a piece of writing over a few days. Teachers can also access their writing and support students to use the feedback given and check their understanding of both the topic and the sentence structures.
