At Mihi School, we believe the child is at the center of the learning. This is because we know that everyone has their own passions, wonderings, questions, strengths and needs. At Mihi School, we call Learning Through Play - Discovery Learning, as we believe that students learn best when discovering new things, ideas, likes and dislikes naturally. While this occurs through Play, we feel it is important to accommodate all learners, small / big, young and old. The older we get, the more we inquire and discover.
Why?
Discovery Learning is a child’s natural way of exploring the world we live in. It covers all aspects of learning – physical, social, emotional and cognitive. It provides learning opportunities that are interactive, multi-sensory, creative and imaginative. Children are not only learning about the activity or working towards an outcome, they are engaging with each other, negotiating, sorting out arguments and fostering friendships.
Why is Discovery Learning important?
The NZ Curriculum Refresh means that all students are reflected in the curriculum. Our curriculum needs to be personalised, inclusive, culturally responsive, broader and deeper - Discovery Learning responds to this.
Discovery Learning is researched, a developmentally appropriate practice, fun and engaging. It enables children to learn values and habits for learning. Discovery Learning promotes Emotional and Self-Regulation and Oral Language.
Discovery Learning provides a seamless transition from Kindergarten and Childcare Centers to Primary School for our new entrant tamariki. As students move through to the senior levels of Primary School, they start to discover new knowledge and capabilities through hands-on activities, and inquiry and research.
While Discovery Learning is an important aspect of child development, so too are Mathematics and Literacy. These core subjects are explicitly taught throughout the day and are based on the individual student's learning needs.
